Alta Orth was born on Thursday, November 12, 1914 in Bon Homme County near Scotland, South Dakota to William and Margaret (Gall) Magstadt. She attended country school through the 8th grade. Alta was united in marriage to Peter Orth on October 31, 1935 at her parent’s home near Scotland. They farmed for nearly 40 years near Lesterville, and retired to Scotland in 1976. Alta enjoyed getting together with other ladies to work on quilts. She loved to sew and made many shirts and dresses for her children and later, her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and will be remembered for her holiday treats. She and Peter were also known for their homemade noodles. Alta was the family historian and lovingly compiled scrapbooks which held the newspaper clippings and memorabilia of her children’s and grandchildren’s achievements during their school years. Alta became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Scotland in January of 2007, and it is there that she passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, having achieved the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 2 days.
Alta’s memory will be cherished by her four children: Dorene (Marlin) Becker of rural Meckling, Ronald Orth of Scotland, Verna (Luverne) Bierle of Webster City, Iowa, and LeRoy (Laverna) Orth of Ames, Iowa; twelve grandchildren: Timothy Becker, Jeffrey Becker, Julie Becker, Conley Orth, Shannon Orth, Kyle Orth, Darren Orth, Scott Bierle, Todd Bierle, Tonya Matuszak, Pamela Covell and Kirsten Alexander; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Magstadt, and one sister, Esther (Al) Gall, both of Scotland.
In addition to her parents, William and Margaret Magstadt, Alta was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Orth in 2001, a sister, Laura Orth, a brother in infancy, a daughter-in-law, Loraine Orth in 2007, a grandson-in-law, Christopher Covell, and a sister-in-law, Ethel Magstadt.
