Ben was born on August 28, 1941 to Paul and Adeline (Frerichs) Strombeck in Mitchell. He was baptized on October 15, 1941 and confirmed on May 15, 1955. He grew up in Mount Vernon where he met his high school sweetheart, Irmgard Rose (Schumacher) Strombeck. They were married at Zion Lutheran Church in Mitchell on June 24, 1962, and were blessed with four children.
After graduating from Mount Vernon High School in 1959, Ben went on to study Industrial Arts at SSTC in Springfield. Early on, he found that his true passion lay within teaching and mentoring high school students. This led to a fulfilling career as a beloved teacher and coach at Tripp High School.

Ben was predeceased by his parents (Paul and Adeline Strombeck), sister and brother-in law (Donadee and Dean Nicholson), and sisters-in-law (Judy Hohn, Freida Fenster, Gloria Schumacher, and Alice Schumacher).
