Betty Rhoades passed away March 15, 2024 at Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD. As per her request, there will be no services nor memorials.
Betty was born to Edward and Mary (Gage) Aleck October 5, 1925 in Harrison County, Iowa. Her younger years were spent on the family farm near Logan, Iowa. Betty went to high school in Missouri Valley, Iowa for 3 years and graduated from Benson High School in Omaha, Nebraska.
Betty attended Omaha University and received a teaching certificate. She taught rural school in the Omaha area. During the war, Betty also worked at the Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue, Nebraska.
Betty married Kenneth Rhoades in the late 1940s and to this union were born 3 children, Cheryl, Kenneth III and Michael. The family resided in Omaha and Carter Lake, Iowa before moving to Pickstown, South Dakota in the early 1950s.
After the children had gotten older, Betty returned to college at the University of South Dakota/Springfield. After graduating Betty began her teaching career in South Dakota. She taught at rural schools, Pickstown, Fairfax, Marty Mission, Lake Andes and Lake View Colony. After retirement she moved to Yankton.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband; parents and sister, Eilene.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl (John) Leuthold of Lincoln, NE, Kenneth of Fortuna, CA and Michael (Jane) of Yankton; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.
