Carolyn Winckler

Carolyn Winckler was born on June 20, 1941 to Carl and Winifred (Wharton) McFarland in Yankton, South Dakota. She spent her childhood on a farm near Gayville until the family moved into Yankton in 1949. She graduated from Yankton High School and went on to attend Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. For a time, she worked at Human Services Center in Yankton which is where she met her future husband, Karl Winckler. On June 11, 1961, they were united in marriage and blessed with seven children. She went on to work as a caretaker at Mickelson Nursing Home in Yankton. In the fall of 1975, they made their home in Tyndall. She began to work at the Academy in Springfield and was well respected by the children and her coworkers.
Carolyn never stopped caring for and helping her children and grandchildren. She was very softhearted and selfless. She was quick to cry out of joy and shared an abundance of love with her family. She was affectionately called “GG” by her great-grandchildren. Carolyn cherished the holidays and the large family gatherings that go with them. Her family always looked forward to and enjoyed her McFarland casserole.
Carolyn passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at St. Michael’s Hospital Avera in Tyndall having attained the age of 78 years, 2 months, and 14 days.
She is survived, remembered, and loved by her children: Karl (Mary Ann) Winckler, Jr. of Tyndall, Karla (Mark) Schelske of Parkston, Tom (Lisa) Winckler of Oakland, NE, Mary Olson of Tyndall, Thabatha Slowey of Tyndall, Martha Winckler of Tyndall, and Nathan (Megan) Winckler of Springfield; grandchildren: Jason, Dana, Andy, Sara, Shelby (Zain), Ashley, Meagan, Michael (Abby), Samantha (Nate), Karen, Jacob, Jeremy, Kelsey, Daine, Brandon, Logan, Danica, Gary, Denise, Mila, and Iain; and great-grandchildren: Makinzy, Addisyn, Harper, August, and Sterling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a sister, two brothers, a grandson, and a granddaughter.
This obituary was written by Goglin Funeral Home on behalf of the family.

Service Program

To the Winkler Family: My deepest condolences in the loss of your mom. Carolyn was a very loving, caring and special woman and she will be with you always. I will always remember the special times we had over the last 35+ years of knowing each other. Lots of camping, playing cards to just visiting about anything and everything. Of course some of the wild things us kids did together hoping our parents would not find out about because they were busy playing cards until the early early hours of the morning. Carolyn has always had a special place in my heart. Remember a mother is with us always, first in her lifetime, then forever in our memory. Keeping you in our prayers.

Extending sympathy to Carolyn's family. Having known Carolyn in my younger years, and having the honor of working with her at the Academy, I'm blessed with many fond memories. Genuine, kind and caring, a true example to co workers and students. My heart hurts with yours.
