Carolyn Winckler was born on June 20, 1941 to Carl and Winifred (Wharton) McFarland in Yankton, South Dakota. She spent her childhood on a farm near Gayville until the family moved into Yankton in 1949. She graduated from Yankton High School and went on to attend Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. For a time, she worked at Human Services Center in Yankton which is where she met her future husband, Karl Winckler. On June 11, 1961, they were united in marriage and blessed with seven children. She went on to work as a caretaker at Mickelson Nursing Home in Yankton. In the fall of 1975, they made their home in Tyndall. She began to work at the Academy in Springfield and was well respected by the children and her coworkers.
Carolyn never stopped caring for and helping her children and grandchildren. She was very softhearted and selfless. She was quick to cry out of joy and shared an abundance of love with her family. She was affectionately called “GG” by her great-grandchildren. Carolyn cherished the holidays and the large family gatherings that go with them. Her family always looked forward to and enjoyed her McFarland casserole.
