David Marlo Winckler

December 28, 1956 — July 14, 2022

David “Dave” Marlo Winckler, age 65, of Vermillion, SD, passed away at his home, amongst his loving family, on July 14, 2022, after a lengthy illness.

A casual celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 6 at the Eagles Club in Vermillion, beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Dave was born on December 28th, 1956 to Huber and Edna (Fischer) Winckler in Tyndall, South Dakota and was the third youngest of a slew of siblings. He loved the farm, near Tyndall, where he lived until his family moved into town when Dave was 10 years old, in 1967. He played Tyndall Panther football and graduated from Tyndall High School in 1975 and played fast pitch softball for Roy’s Bar. Dave attended and graduated post-secondary schooling at Pipestone (MN) Area Vo-Tech, along with his future wife, Sue and graduated in 1980.

On January 10, 1981 he married Sue Olson of Burbank, SD. They both liked playing cards, fishing and hunting and spent much of their free time enjoying those activities, especially early on in their marriage. In 1985, they began their family and from this union, three daughters were born: Amanda (Mandy), Sandi and Sadie. Dave played softball for the Eagles Club in Vermillion for several years. He loved playing and watching all kinds of sports, including his daughters’ soccer games. Dave and Sue lived in Vermillion for the entirety of their marriage.

He held precious memories of living on “the farm” which he spoke of quite often. He talked about driving the tractor and pickup using wood blocks under his shoes because he couldn’t reach the pedals; the horse and geese that would bite him and his brothers every chance they could; and his parents, aunts and uncles butchering and canning in the “summer kitchen.”

Dave was a hardworking, “common-sense” man and of the jobs he held as an adult, the two he liked and talked about the most, were managing the Eagles Club in Vermillion and helping his farming friends during spring plantings and fall harvests. This got him back to the “farm days” he cherished as a youngster. In his free time and in his later years, he enjoyed tinkering with and fixing anything and everything that was (or wasn’t) broken, sharing life lessons with his children and grandchildren, and helping out his friends and family whenever he could. Dave had many friends, lots of family, and enjoyed spending time with all of them.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Sue; daughters, Mandy (Jeremy GoBell) and Sandi (Joe Pulliam) all of Sioux Falls, SD and Sadie (Josh Frye) of Vermillion, SD; grandchildren, Devin, Owen and Ethan GoBell, Kingston Fabian, Bennet Meendering and Brooklynn Pushor all of Sioux Falls; sisters, Norma (Bob) Bender of St. Helena, NE and Arla (Lavern) Dangel of Yankton, SD; brothers, Joe (Loretta) of Meckling, SD, Jarvis (Marilyn) of Avon, Murray (Lisa) of Collinsville, VA and Larry of Indiana, PA; sister-in-law, Barbara Winckler of Winner, SD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Edna; his brothers, Leland and Myron (Mike); an unborn grandson; and several beloved in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
