Formerly of Tripp

Elva Brosz, age 94 formerly of Tripp, passed away Monday, June 26, 2023 at Bormann Manor in Parkston with her son and daughter at her side.

Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29 at Friedens Reformed Church, with Pastor Andy Underhile officiating. Interment will be in Friedens Reformed Church Cemetery.

Edward and Lydia (Fauth) Kost welcomed their fourth child to the family, February 22, 1929. Elva was their first and only daughter. She grew up with three older brothers on a farm southeast of Clayton, SD. Elva always wanted a sister and her wish almost came true. She ended up with three wonderful sisters-in-law, instead. After graduating from eighth grade country school, Elva’s dad needed her help on the farm because her brothers weren’t home to help. She helped her dad with all the chores and any farm work that needed to be done. She met her future husband at a local hangout called Groveland which was near Tyndall, SD.

Elva married Loren Brosz at the Parkston Congregational Church on the afternoon of Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955. They lived a year and a half with Loren’s parents in Tripp until Loren finished building their house across the street. Elva enjoyed living in this house until February 2020 when she moved to assisted living in Parkston. Elva and Loren shared 35 years of marriage until Loren passed away, November 6, 1990. They attended local dances and loved to visit family in Oregon and Custer. They were blessed with three children, Scott (deceased), Monte and Robin. Elva held various jobs which included working at the Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Tripp for 20 years. After that she was employed as a homemaker through ROCS services. Elva sewed, gardened, canned and baked cakes, pies, rolls, bread and kuchen for her family. She was also known for her delicious German dishes, knoephla and strudels. Elva made quilts by hand from embroidered blocks she stitched. Her favorite hymn was I Shall Not be Moved along with her favorite Bible verse, John 3:16.

Elva is survived by her son, Monte of Tripp; daughter, Robin of Sioux Falls and brother, Erwin Kost of Parkston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Lydia; son, Scott in 1988; husband, Loren and brothers, Edmund and Raymond Kost.
