Eugene J. Sutera

November 10, 1927 — December 16, 2017

Eugene John Sutera was born on October 11, 1927 to Frank and Emma (Vavruska) Sutera on a farm in rural Bon Homme County, South Dakota. He graduated from Tyndall High School on May 11, 1945. On March 1, 1947, Eugene enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged on March 13, 1948. On September 2, 1952, Eugene was united in marriage to Melva Jean Bambas in Vermillion.
For several years, Eugene farmed in the Tyndall area. On January 6, 1961, he began to farm at the Sutera Homestead. In 1978, Eugene retired from farming and moved into Tabor where he worked as a city maintenance man and police officer. The couple enjoyed 13 years in Tabor, until they retired and made their home in Tyndall in 1992. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching and participating in all sports. He loved attending the wrestling and baseball events and cheering on his grandchildren.
Eugene was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Tyndall and served in many offices through the years. He also personally ensured that an attendance was taken and that the church bell was rung. He was the devoted caretaker of the Country Presbyterian Cemetery in rural Tabor his entire life. Eugene was also a lifetime member of the Tabor American Legion.
On Saturday, December 16, 2017, having attained the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 5 days, Eugene went home to be with his Lord and Savior.
He is survived and remembered by his children: Sharon (Ron) Broz, Lynette (Jack) Schoon, and Randy (Claudette) Sutera; grandchildren: Aaron Sutera, Corinna (Bruce) Huggins, Jeremy Schoon, Tara Sutera, Jeff Schoon, Shane Sutera, Christopher Broz and fiancée Natasha Conners, and Kaylee Schoon; great-grandchildren: Tanner Fridrich, Stas Sutera, Carson Fridrich, Briannika Sutera, Isabelle Sutera, Brayden Schoon, Emily Huggins, Jacob Huggns, Mileigh Sutera, Lexi Huggins, Brekken Bossman, Pria Sesler, and DeVonne Sesler; siblings: Mabel Winningham and Dan Sutera; sisters-in-law Florence Sutera and Shirley Sutera; and many nieces and nephews.
