Evelyn Hamberger Van De Car

Evelyn Laverne (Hamberger) Van De Car was born Thursday, November 10, 1921 on the family farm near Scotland, South Dakota to Robert and Pauline (Vilhauer) Hamberger.  She married George Alger Van De Car on August 19, 1959, in Honolulu Hawaii. After Evelyn graduated from Scotland High School, she worked at numerous businesses in Scotland including the Scotland Clinic. Evelyn then moved to Yankton in 1950 and worked at the Firestone Store until 1956 when she moved to Honolulu HI where she worked in jewelry sales and designing, a job she enjoyed very much.  Evelyn loved Hawaii and talked of it often when she moved back to Scotland after her husband’s death in 1984.  She was very active with the Senior Citizens in Scotland; she also bowled on the Thursday Afternoon League in Scotland as long as her health permitted.  In 1998 Evelyn moved to the Springfield Assisted Living Center where she continued to work with the crafts she loved and in 2006 moved to the Scotland Good Samaritan Society where she spent her remaining years with loving care from the staff. Evelyn had a deep love of cats two of which were her long time companions, Shadow and Pa Oni.
Evelyn passed away Wednesday June 23, 2010 at the Scotland Good Samaritan Society having attained the age of 88 years, 7 months and 15 days.
Evelyn will be missed by her stepsister and friend Donna (Junior) Meiers, her half brother Thomas (Hanhee) Hamberger and three nieces - Carol Merrill, Fairfield CA; Dianne (Terry) Simantel and Linda Fuerst of Scotland, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, and brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Elsa Hamberger.
