Howard Curtis Mochel was born on Friday, January 19, 1917 in Parkston, South Dakota to George and Lydia (Mogck) Mochel. He was baptized on May 22, 1917 by Rev. George L. Rocher. His mother died in August of 1917, and he moved with his father to Missouri as an infant where he was raised with the help of aunts and uncles. On October 27, 1918, Howard’s father was remarried to Martha Bruens. He attended Franklin County School in Franklin County, Missouri through the 8th grade and was confirmed on May 24, 1931 at St. John’s Evangelical Church at Berger, Missouri by Rev. E.H. Dickbernd. In 1935 when Howard was 16, he rode by himself in a boxcar full of cattle back to South Dakota and stopped at the town of Beardsley, which was located between Tripp and Parkston. Howard was united in marriage to Bertha Cerole Weisser on February 24, 1941. They farmed northeast of Tripp, later buying a farm west of Tripp. In 1998, they retired and moved into Tripp. Howard enjoyed many hunting trips and fished at every opportunity. He was a member of Frieden’s Reformed Church and the Moose Lodge. Howard passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Society of Tripp at the age of 91 years, 4 months and 5 days.
Howard is survived by his wife, Bertha, of Tripp; many nieces and nephews; and many relatives in Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lydia Mochel and his stepmother, Martha Bruens Mochel.
