Janet “Jan” Kaye Wittmeier was born on January 9, 1948 to Gordon Francis and Vlasta Marie (Bruna) Hajek in Yankton, South Dakota. The Hajek family made their home on a farm northeast of Tyndall. As a child, Jan helped her Dad farm and attended Nedved #47 country school. She went on to graduate from Tyndall high school and attend Stewart School of Hairstyling in Sioux Falls. On September 14, 1969, Jan was united in marriage to Duane Joseph Wittmeier and together they made their home in Yankton.
Jan loved her job as a hairstylist. For 20 years she worked for Hair by Stewarts, then Touch of Class for a short time, Great Shapes & Styles for 21 years, and lastly at The Cutting Crew for 5.5 years. For over a total of 48 years, she enjoyed her work, time, and conversations with her clients and hair salon co-workers.
Jan was blessed with an outgoing and friendly personality. She easily made friends wherever she went and was willing to help anybody who needed it.
She loved flowers, crafts, and animals, especially dogs and horses. Jan also had a passion for fishing. For over 42 years, Duane and Jan would take a vacation and stay at their friend’s cabin on Lake Poinsett. Together they would spend the days fishing, Agate hunting, and simply enjoying their time together.
In November 2011, Jan was diagnosed with Leukemia. Days could be hard, tiring, or painful, yet she kept her positive attitude. After her long struggle with Leukemia, she fell asleep in Jesus on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at her home in Yankton having attained the age of 68 years, 10 months, and 1 day.
