Mary Kada Eckman, daughter of Joseph and Veronica (Morris) Eckman was born on September 16, 1939, near Whitewater, Wisconsin.  When she was 12 years old her parents and siblings moved to Blunt, South Dakota where Kada graduated from high school in 1957.  While working in Pierre South Dakota, she met Richard McCann.  They were married in 1961.  Two sons and two daughters were born to this union.  In addition to raising her own children in Pierre, the family opened their home to numerous foster children for several years.  It was in 1974 that she moved to Scotland, South Dakota to continue her role as a busy working mom.  Kada was a dedicated Highlander fan traveling to games, cheering on and supporting her children.  She served as a school board member for the Scotland School District and was a long-standing member of St. George’s Catholic Church.  She was the office manager for Dakota Farm Builders in Scotland and later came to work in the County Assessor’s Office in Tyndall before retirement.  After living briefly in Florida near her brothers, she returned to care for loved ones back in Scotland.  In 2013 she made her home in Yankton until she went to live with her Father in heaven on July 31, 2018, after a short battle with cancer.
Kada was a lady on the go.  She loved to hop in her car and head for Florida, Minnesota, Colorado, Wisconsin, or the Black Hills of South Dakota to visit family and be part of their lives wherever they had grown.  She made it her mission to pay a visit to the newest additions to the families as she truly cherished her 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children Tate (Jenny Rogers) McCann of Humboldt, Bridget (Hilary) Hanisch of Yankton, Richley (Tony) Turner of Canon, City CO,  and Timothy (Cheryl) McCann of Newell; former daughter-in-law Kristine Bjorum;  brothers Mike Eckman, Morry (Barb) Eckman, and Rick Eckman of Florida;  sister Joan Vickerman of Wisconsin; Grandchildren Hillary McCann, Sarah McCann, Andrew McCann, Erin McCann, Dorothy McCann, Ben McCann, Riley Hall, Zac Orth, Heather Bonebrake, Sean McCann, Seth McCann and Hailey McCann; 16 great-grandchildren; Special nieces Maggie (Doug) Day of Flandreau, Carrie Jo (Terry Mac) Howard of Strathcona, Minnesota; numerous nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her parents, sister Rosemary Reilly, brother Jerry Eckman, and former husband Richard McCann.
