Katherine Mary Schmidt passed away November 18, 2024 at her home in Chandler, AZ. Her funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Friday, December 6 at St. George Catholic Church in Scotland. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in St. George Catholic Cemetery.
Katherine was born on October 8, 1937 to Joseph and Rose (nee Podzimek) Schmidt at the Scotland clinic. She was the 8th of 10 children. Her first job was setting pins at the bowling alley. She later worked at the Scotland Café, the Royal Theatre and on Saturday, after the movie, she helped out at Max Drug. Katherine was a majorette in junior high and played trumpet in the Scotland High School band. She graduated from SHS in 1955 and attended Mount Marty College, majoring in elementary education.
Katherine taught school in South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska. It was in Omaha that she met and married Lyle Reising in 1966. They had three sons, Mark, Bryan and Scott. She enjoyed telling her sons about ‘the way it used to be.’ After her divorce in 1980, Katherine worked as a medical secretary at Methodist Hospital. She was involved in hospital ministry and the Francis House, feeding the poor. She worked tirelessly to ensure all her sons graduated St. Pius X Grade School and Creighton Prep High School.
In 1994 Katherine moved to Chandler, AZ, believing the heat would help her disability. She helped with Meals on Wheels and also with funerals at her church. She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren how to make cookies and sticky rolls from scratch, cutting the rolls with thread, just the way her mother did with string.
Katherine is survived by her three sons and seven grandchildren: Mark Reising, Matthew and Madison in Arizona; Bryan Reising (Lori), Dylan, Miranda and Drew in Nebraska; and Scott Reising (Kelly), Leo and Henry in California and three siblings, Betty Kellen, Don and Greg.
She was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings, Louis, Ray, Joe, Dorothy, Marilyn Schaefer and Carol Miller.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Mount Marty University or your favorite charity.
