Kolleen Marie Want

Kolleen Want passed away in her home in Yankton, SD on July 19^th, 2023 at the age of 61, surrounded by family and friends.  

Visitation will be held 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, July 24 at Goglin Funeral Home in Yankton, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 25 at Goglin Funeral Home. Visitation resumes at 9:30 a.m.

She was born to Kenneth and Mary Scheer on April 1^st, 1962 in McCook, Nebraska. Kolleen grew up in Pierce, Nebraska and was the fourth child out of six children.

Kolleen became a mother at the tender age of 18 to April Empkey and had two more children, Lindsey and Landrey Leonard several years later. Kolleen married Brian Want on January 22^nd, 1994 and gained another daughter, Mindy Want.

Kolleen worked in the mental health field as a mental health aid for over 30 years. Her dedication and passion for helping others were some of her greatest strengths. She had an amazing ability to connect with anyone in need and would make them feel accepted and loved. Her love for helping others was more than just a job and more of a way of life. Wherever she went, she spread her love and light with acceptance and compassion.

Kolleen enjoyed socializing with others and was known for her funny sense of humor and contagious belly laugh. She could hold a conversation with just about anyone and loved to listen and talk about life with her friends and family. If anyone needed a person to listen to and offer valued advice she was the one to call. She was always willing to help in any way she could.

Some of the best moments she spent were with her grandchildren. She loved being a grandma and found so much joy in watching them grow. She also loved her fur babies and could be seen with her two dogs and two cats hanging out by her side.

Kolleen loved doing a variety of crafts and had a very creative side. She enjoyed decorating her home inside and out, shopping, and watching a good movie. She enjoyed going for relaxing drives with her husband and loved ice cream and candy bars.

Kolleen is survived by her husband, Brian Want of Yankton, SD; her children, April Empkey (Rich Spitz) of Yankton, SD, Lindsey Leonard of Sioux Falls, SD and Mindy Want of Denver, CO; her six grandchildren, Aaliyah, Jordan, Ashtyn, Averie, Liam, and Layton; siblings, Kurk Scheer, Krista Schluns and K.C. Scheer, and many, many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Mary Scheer; her beloved son, Landrey Leonard; mother-in-law, Ruth Weber; sister, Kathy Iberg; sister, Kelly Campbell, and brother-in-law, Steve Schluns.
