Ludwig “Lud” Rettedal was born on May 1, 1924 to Olaf and Dagmar (Eriksen) Rettedal in Minneapolis, MN. He attended school in Clarkfield, MN. In 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he settled in Madison, SD. On July 14, 1947, Lud was united in marriage to Donna Haley. In 1955, they moved to Winner, SD for a time before making their home in Scotland in 1959. Together they owned and operated the Scotland Bootery.
Lud was an avid golfer and was instrumental in starting golf courses in Winner and Scotland. He later became the greenskeeper at the Scotland Golf Course. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Scotland and the Gideons International. In his years in Scotland, Lud was also a member of the Scotland American Legion Post #155, Scotland Rotary, and on the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Board of Directors for over 20 years.
Lud passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Avera In Scotland having attained the age of 92 years.
Lud’s memory will be cherished by his five sons: Alan Rettedal of Reykjavik, Iceland, Dean (Karen) Rettedal of Scotland, Lee (Sharon) Rettedal of Tulsa, OK, Kerry (Debbie) Rettedal of Aurora, CO, and Reed (Lisa) Rettedal of Loveland, CO; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters: Sylvia Kindschy and Dagmar Oldfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Donna, his parents, and brothers: Ole Rettedal and Cecil Rettedal.
