Marie Helen Ulmer

Marie Ulmer, age 98 of Scotland passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the Scotland Good Samaritan Home.

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 21 at St. George Catholic Church in Scotland, with Fr. Robert Lacey, celebrant. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. George Catholic Cemetery.

Marie Helen Weiland was born to Joseph and Julia (Mohr) Weiland on February 7, 1925 in Scotland, SD. Marie grew up enjoying her high school days. After graduation from Scotland High School she was employed at the Office of Price Administration (OPA) in Tyndall, SD for three years and later at the TS Martin Company in Sioux City, IA. While working at the OPA she met Darold (Buzz) Shaffhusen of Tyndall and they eventually married and moved to Rapid City, SD where they both were employed. When their marriage ended, Marie went to work in several Rapid City banks for the next 20 years. Upon retirement she moved back to Scotland to be with her family.

Marie later met Merritt Ulmer from Menno, SD. They dated a few years, then married in Texas, where they spent their winters, followed by summers in Menno. They both loved to travel, dance, play cards, and enjoy their friends. Merritt passed away in his home in Menno on February 14, 2014. Marie then moved back to Scotland where she lived until her passing.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Merritt; her parents; ten brothers and four sisters.

Surviving her are many nieces and nephews, and two sisters-in-law, Gladys Weiland of Rapid City and Carol Muell of Logan, IA.
