Melvin Edward Haase, age 76, of Scotland, South Dakota passed away at the Landmann-Jungman Memorial Hospital Avera in Scotland surrounded by his family on Monday, September 18, 2017.
Funeral services will be Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 10:30 am at United Church of Christ, Scotland with Reverend Ron Shifley officiating.  Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, Scotland.  Visitations will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at the United Church of Christ in Scotland concluding with a prayer service at 7 pm.
Melvin was born on November 16, 1940 to Tice and Minnie (Kruse) Haase on the family farm south of Scotland, South Dakota.  He attended Plugraph Country School until the 8th grade at which time he took over the family farm.  On August 8, 1965, Melvin was united in marriage to Jessica Foley at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Scotland, South Dakota.  Together they made their home on Melvin’s family farm and were devoted to farming throughout their lives. For decades they raised and milked dairy cows until they retired from dairy farming and sold the milk cows in 1991.  Melvin loved the outdoors and enjoyed raising corn, beans, and alfalfa.  They continued farmed until his retirement in 2006 at which time he worked daily at the Main Stop which they purchased in 2000.  He enjoyed talking to customers and watching the Scotland students grow up.  As a hobby, he also enjoyed being a member of the Scotland bowling league.
Melvin was very active and supported his church in many ways, most recently as a faithful usher at the United Church of Christ.  Melvin was active in the care and supervision of the Ebenezer Cemetery and memorials will be designated for the perpetual care fund of the Ebenezer Cemetery.
Melvin was an honest man that would go to ends of the earth to help someone.  Melvin had a quiet humor that took people off-guard but would always bring a smile to their face.  Melvin was a well-known, well-liked man in the community of Scotland.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jessica Haase of Scotland SD; children: Jeffrey (Kathy) Haase of Hartford SD, Jennifer Anderson of Scotland SD, and Jody Haase of Scotland SD; his grandchildren: Seth Anderson and Sadie Anderson; brothers-in-law: Francis Serr, John Foley, James Foley; sister-in-law Mary Jensen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; sister Margie Serr; brothers-in-law Gary Foley and Dennis Foley.
