Richard “Dick” Lee Ireland was born on September 25, 1942 to Wilfred “Pat” and Agnes (Diede) Ireland in Burke, South Dakota. His dad taught school there until he decided to farm. They moved to a farm southeast of Scotland and that is where Dick was raised.
He attended rural school through the 8th grade and went on to graduate from Scotland High School. He took 2 years vocational school in Canada and then into the real world.
He married Marilyn Simental in 1962 and 2 girls were born to this union, Debbie and Amy. Marilyn passed away in 1976. After several failed marriages, he settled in with his children’s babysitter, Carol (Hamberger) Ireland. To this union, no children were born as they both brought their own. Carol brought Heidi and Holly.
Dick worked for Bon Homme County for 2 years, Rapp Chevrolet in Mario for 2 years, 21 years with Cargill Inc., 11 years with Alcoa Aluminum in Yankton, and finally 2 years with Boyd’s Gunstocks in Mitchell. He retired in 2003.
Dick worked on many lawnmowers and chainsaws in his retirement. He also went snowmobiling and four-wheeling as his way of enjoyment and pastime. Dick loved the people and friends he met on his journey through life.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Carol Ireland of Olivet, SD; mother Agnes Ireland of Faulkton, SD; daughters: Debbie (Steve) White of Plainview, NE and Amy (Mike) Dahlquist of Maple Grove, MN; stepchildren: Heidi (Myron) Fischer of Lesterville, SD and Holly Fechner of Mitchell, SD; grandchildren: Mackenzie Dahlquist, Spencer Dahlquist, Derek (Whitney) White, Brittany White, Nicole White, Ashley (Trevor) Wagner, Kayla Fischer, Brittney Hamberger, Dustin Nordrum, and Ali Gerriets; step-great-grandchildren: Mya and Lily; sisters: Judy Strachan of Mesquite, NV, Ellen Melius of Faulkton, SD, and Nancy Hoffer of Bandon, OR; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Wilfred Ireland, wife Marilyn Ireland, brother Dennis Ireland, and step-great-grandson Cory.
