Robert Vellek was born near Tyndall, South Dakota on Saturday, November 22, 1919 to Adolph and Christina (Podzimek) Vellek. Bob went to country school through the 8th grade. He served in the Army during World War II, from October, 1942 through February, 1946. He was stationed in Hawaii and overseas. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Bob farmed north of Tyndall until 1973 when he moved into Tyndall. While in Tyndall, he built garages and bought several houses, which he remodeled and then rented or sold. Bob was a hard worker – it was once said that he could have a day’s work done before breakfast. He became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society of Tyndall in 2005. It is there that he died on Friday, June 27, 2008 at the age of 88 years, 7 months and 5 days.
Bob is survived by a brother, Louis Vellek, of Tyndall; a sister, Helen Ryken of Huron, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Christina Vellek; two sisters, Alice and Louise; two brothers, Ray and Ernest; and his special friend, Betty Svanda.
