Russel was born on September 3, 1947 in Scotland, South Dakota. His parents were Timothy T. Ireland and Marian (Hebbert) Ireland. Russel lived his entire life in the Scotland area. He attended Scotland schools for 12 years; graduating in 1965 from Scotland High School. Farming was his goal in life. His favorite pastime was visiting with people.

On September 4, 1981, Russel married Barbara Ann Brezina in Tripp, South Dakota. Two boys were born to this union; Matthew on August 3, 1982 and Jonathan on March 25, 1984.

Russel passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at the age of 75. His parents and older brother, Archie preceded him in death.

Russel is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Matthew (Amanda) and Jonathan (Jordan) and grandchildren, Sophia, Ava, Aden, Emerald, Archie, Addy, Baker and Brooks.
