Wayne H. Nelson

September 17, 1937 — September 24, 2020

Wayne Harold Nelson was born on September 17, 1937 in Scotland, SD to Harold and Meta Nelson. After graduating from Scotland High School in 1955, Wayne spent most of his career working for the Scotland Dairy Coop, where he eventually attained the title of Foreman. In the winter of 1985 Wayne then directed his expertise in the field of dairy and became a Dairy Inspector for the State of South Dakota until his retirement, 16 years later (2001).
The most eventful and rewarding day in Wayne’s life took place on Sunday, May 8th, 1960 where he was joined in marriage to Barbara (Gukeisen) from Parkston, SD. In addition to his lifelong dedication to his wife, family and work, Wayne also served with the 137th Engineering Battalion of the Army National Guard, Mayor of Scotland, Scotland Fire Department Volunteer and active Presbyterian church member.
Wayne passed away on Thursday, Sept. 24th at the Menno/Olivet Care Center…exactly one week after his 83rd birthday. Grateful for having shared his life are Wayne’s children: Scott (Betha) Nelson of Hartford and Cara (Tim) Schaeffer of Olivet; his grandchildren: Nicole, Cassidy, Kevin, Brodric and Ryley; great-grandchildren; Aiden and Jazmine; and his brother, Larry Nelson of Pierre. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials will be given to the Joseph Verm American Legion Post #155 and Paul Grossheusch VFW Post #2966 in Scotland.
